OK, so it's not a secret that I am completely obsessed with velvet (ie: Velvet Kiss). I love the way the material feels and looks, but mostly because it can work for any body type. I even had a dream last night that I was shopping for velvet furniture―not kidding.
However, I understand why people are apprehensive on giving this material a try. I get it. You think grandma, 90's gone wrong, or not fitting right and looking like a fool. But, you're wrong. I have curves for days and I still believe that when I step out my door wearing velvet, I look great.
Here's a little velvet information for you fashion history buffs: Velvet was originally created to be worn by the nobility and was exported throughout the world from Egypt. In 1399, King Richard II of England stated in his will that his body should be clothed in velveto. Often, velvet was created from silk fibers, which was sold by the hundred per yard, and then manipulated to create the 'velvety' feel. However, in present day velvet can be made from cotton, linen, mohair, wool, polyester, nylon, and other synthetic and natural materials that lower the cost, but also the quality.
Most velvet found in popular stores today is not made predominately of silk, making it accessible to the public. Velvet is found everywhere in many different forms―crop tops, blouses, denim, trousers, dresses, jumpers, leggings, skirts etc. The tones are perfect for the winter as well, as they appear in dark blue, red, green, and black predominately. And, the best part, being a Michigander and surviving below 0 temperatures, the fabric is pretty warm and insulated!
I found these three fabulous pieces on my latest thrift haul. I'm amazed that people abandoned such gems. Originally, they were all floor length and just needed a little bit of love to bring them out from the grave. They are a perfect fit for this season to add bit of texture to a wardrobe. Here are the before (yes, I self-timed these pictures in my living room and they are horrible quality) and afters.
1. Maroon 90's Velvet Dress: Before
As you can see, the dress didn't have a great silhouette. But, I loved the color and knew that it could be turned around.
Maroon 90's Velvet Crop Top After:

Maroon 90's Velvet Crop Top After:
This was a full coverage, floor length with a leather and steel belt accent in the front.
Black 90's Velvet Cocktail Dress: After
This was my favorite of the three. I feel in love with the button and mesh details on the back and side; plus, it already had a wonderful silhouette to work with. Find of the day!
My last plug for velvet is that it is versatile and functional in many faucets to look winter chic this season. Whether it is an accessory or focus, you will standout looking casual, red-carpet ready, or somewhere in between. Which is the fun of fashion!
